If you choose to forgo a gondola ride during your Venice stay, as I did, you can still bring the gondola home. Indeed, one ride by a real-life gondolier will cost about the same as 10 miniature solar-powered toy gondolas, each about 15 centimeters long. Place them in a window or on a desk that catches the light, and they will gently rock back and forth for hours. Compact and lightweight, you can pack them between your clothing for the flight home. Sure, you can also buy Murano glass jewelry or a leather wallet, but let’s face it, you can find those all over the world. The miniature gondolas, however, seem to be on sale only in Venice, where they are available in souvenir stores about 10 euros.
