ORIGIN
Matt James is an American reality star and real estate broker originally from North Carolina. He’s a former football wide receiver for Wake Forest University. In June 2020, James was cast as the lead on season 25 of ABC’s The Bachelor. He’s the first African-American male lead in Bachelor franchise history. The first Black female lead was Rachel Lindsay back in 2017 (Bachelorette season 13).

James was born on December 5, 1991, in Raleigh, North Carolina. His parents are Patty and Manny James. Matt attended Sanderson High School where he played football under head coach Tony Lewis. As a senior, he recorded 716 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns. His performance earned him a spot on the Cap-7 All-Conference team. He also had success playing basketball. James graduated from Sanderson in 2010. He continued his football career and academic studies at Wake Forest University.

CAREER

Matt James works as an associate in the real estate industry. He currently works for CBRE Group – the world’s largest real estate service company. Prior to CBRE, he worked briefly at a PNC Bank in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Matt is also an entrepreneur and a community organization founder. He heads the charity ‘ABC Food Tours’ alongside his close friend Tyler Cameron. The organization caters to children in underserved communities by uplifting them and exposing them to new experiences/opportunities. James has also supported the Robin Hood Foundation.

Prior to his historic Bachelor casting, James was slated to be a contestant on Clare Crawley’s Bachelorette season. However, the show was put on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s unclear whether or not he’ll still be a suitor on the show. Matt’s announcement as the first Black bachelor was made in June 2020. His season is slated to premiere in early 2021.
