Glenn Youngkin was born on December 9, 1966 in Richmond in Virginia. His parents were Ellis (née Quinn) and Carroll Wayne Youngkin. His father had played basketball at Duke University and had also worked in accounting and finance. While Glenn Youngkin was a teenager, him and his family moved to Virginia Beach. He completed his education from Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, Virginia and gradated in 1985. While he was in high school, he had received many basketball honors. Under a basketball scholarship, Glenn Youngkin got into the Rice University in Houston, Texas. He played a total of 3 seasons for the Owls in the Southwest Conference, He had a total of 82 points and 67 rebounds in his career. In 1990, Glenn completed his graduation in BA managerial studies and BSc mechanical engineering. Later in 1994, he graduated Harvard Business School with a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Once he graduated from Rice in 1990, Glenn Youngkin he worked at the investment bank First Boston where he dealt with the mergers and the acquisitions and capital market financing. Later the company was bought off by Credit Suisse and came to be known as Credit Suisse First Boston. Glenn left the company in 1992 in order to pursue an MBA. After he completed the course, he joined McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm. In 1995, he joined a private-equity based in Washington D.C, called The Carlyle Group as a part of the US buyout team. Later in 1999, he became a partner and the managing director of the firm. Glenn Youngkin was asked to step back from the deal-making position in April 2008 in order to focus on the firm’s broader strategy. In 2009, he had chaired a seven-person operating committee which dealt with the non-deal, day-to-day operations of the firm. After the founders of the Carlyle Group stepped down to remain as chairmen on the board of directors in October 2017, Glenn Younkin along with Kewsong Lee was appointed as co-CEOs. Glenn took care of the firm’s corporate private equity and global credit businesses. Both Glenn and Kewsong later joined the board of directors. On January 2021, he announced his candidacy for the position of governor of Virginia. He used his personal wealth to fund his candidacy. On May 10, 2021, at the party’s state convention, he won the nomination, defeating six fellow candidates.
