Is 12 Hours Enough for Intermittent Fasting?

August 2024 · 2 minute read

Hands down, the easiest way to get used to intermittent fasting is by doing a 12-hour fast.

While there are benefits of longer fasts, this article explains what happens when you fast for 12 hours and if it’s enough to see results.

Is 12 Hours considered Intermittent Fasting?

Yes, the 12-hour intermittent fasting method is considered to be intermittent fasting. And, if you’re new to the practice, it’s a great way to get started.

A 12-hour fast, meaning not eating for 12 hours, is quite easy to achieve when you stop eating in the evenings and resume your meals, or break your intermittent fasting, with a satiating and healthy meal.

For many, the idea of “not being able to eat” is harder than not eating itself, which is why people often find it difficult to decide between the 12-hour vs 16-hour fasting methods.

What Is the Minimum Hours for Intermittent Fasting?

Experts agree that a 12-hour fast is a common threshold, or the minimum, for people to begin to see the benefits of fasting that include, but are not limited to weight loss, improved mental focus, reduced inflammation, and more.

What Happens When You Fast for 12 Hours

In the simplest terms, after 12 hours of fasting, your body enters a stage of fasting where it can signal the metabolism, hormones, and cells that it is no longer taking on food, and the body can shift its energy and focus to other processes such as cellular repair, convert glucose (sugar) into energy, and search for alternative sources of fuel, from fat cells, to keep going –where “burning fat for fuel comes from”.

While there are many claims about the greatness of fasting, the science of intermittent fasting, is quite complex. And, if you’re trying to practice intermittent fasting for weight loss, reducing your overall calorie intake while eating healthy foods during your fasting period is still the best plan long term.

Is 12 Hour Fasting Good for You?

From my personal experience, the mental clarity and focus I achieve after 12-hour hours of fasting outweigh the downsides and small inconveniences of abstaining from food.

By following an intermittent fasting schedule along with a balanced intermittent fasting meal plan, I feel good about having a structure that supports my health and wellness goals that doesn’t feel restrictive.
